by Jennifer Peters, Seneca Libraries and the Teaching & Learning Centre

in the June 2020 issue

Seneca now has access to an online learning tool for creating short, self-directed assessments, modules, and activities. It’s called H5P.

eCampusOntario recently launched an H5P Studio where faculty from any higher education institution in Ontario can sign up for a free account and start creating materials for online learning. H5P is short for HTML5 Package. It's a free, open-source framework and is financially supported by Mozilla.

H5P gives you the ability to create interactive learning content to embed in My.Seneca, or in an online book in Pressbooks, or on any web page. You can also simply link to the H5P activity.

H5P is used to enhance many types of learning experiences:

  • A form wizard that helps students plan out every step of their project
  • An interactive video to encourage engagement during viewing
  • Self-directed quizzes
  • Image hotspots to explore a graphic more thoroughly
  • Interactive presentations that include self-assessment and opportunities to reflect
  • and much, much more

You can use the eCampusOntario H5P Studio to create H5Ps, but you can also search through the catalogue to access content created across the province at colleges and universities.

To learn more about H5P, visit the online module from the Teaching & Learning Centre or watch MyPD for upcoming webinars.

Examples of H5Ps created at Seneca:

Place Value Quiz

Developing Your TEL Project Proposal

Place Value of Whole Numbers and Decimals
