Program Prioritization

As part of the Academic Planning department's efforts to support Seneca's program development and prioritization, a series of data dashboards were developed in Fall 2017 to connect Seneca-specific and Ontario college system data to macro-level labour market information.

With a focus on the needs of the academic decision-makers, the dashboards addressed four key themes:

  1. Application, confirmation, registration, and graduation trends
  2. Key performance indicator (KPI) trends
  3. Historical labour market information and forecasts
  4. Market share (by credential, discipline, and MTCU program code)

Over the past year, the Academic Planning team has gathered and analyzed the data from the academic planning dashboards to better identify the health of all programs based on the metrics listed above. As part of Seneca’s ongoing program prioritization efforts, programs with lower results across the range of metrics were identified for further review and support, with the following options tailored to each program: remediation strategy (where applicable), offer part-time through the new Centre for Graduate and Professional Studies, and/or suspend intakes.

Program prioritization continues to be top of mind across the college sector as we enter into a corridor funding model and face recent tuition cuts by the provincial government. To ensure the continued success of all Seneca programs, low performing programs will be brought forward twice a year by Academic Planning, deans, and chairs for discussion. Recommendations may be made at that time to pursue remediation strategies, suspensions, or alternate delivery models.
