by Kevin Pitts, the Teaching & Learning Centre

in the Spring 2017 issue

In the previous issue of the Academic Newsletter (Winter 2017; Education Technology Advisory Committee), Laurel Schollen introduced the new Educational Technology Advisory Committee (ETAC). ETAC is one of the of the (ACC) and acts in an advisory capacity to the ACC on the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning (among other things).

Image of Laptop, Tablet, and SmartphoneAs the ETAC Chair, I wanted to give you an update on the committee make-up and activities. Membership is just about set and comprises six faculty, two Chairs, and one member each from Information Technology Services (ITS), the Centre for Flexible Learning (cFLEX), and Counselling and Accessibility Services (CnAS). Over the next few months, we will be adding two students as well. The committee meets once per month and has met three times so far. Lots of good discussion and information sharing has happened on topics such as ITS future planning (e.g., the move of My.Seneca to the cloud), Active Learning Classrooms (ALC), Lecture Capture, Open Educational Resources (OER), and much more.

One of the big projects ETAC has been tasked with is to look into a Digital Learning Strategy (DLS) for Seneca. The idea is to explore ways, given the digital age we find ourselves in, to enhance the learning experience at Seneca. Mobile learning will be a big part of the strategy. We’re just getting started, so much more is yet to come. Look for updates in upcoming issues of the Academic Newsletter.

As always, your input is welcome. If you have any questions or comments about the work of ETAC, please don’t hesitate to email me: Kevin.Pitts@senecacollege.ca.

Last Word: you may have noticed that Seneca folks love their acronyms. This piece includes quite a few. So, on behalf of ETAC, I invite you to try out our little quiz/puzzle. There may even be a prize for the “best” answer/submission (winner to be announced next issue). If interested, try the Acronyms Quiz.
