Mary Two-Axe Earley: I Am Indian Again shares the powerful story of Mary Two-Axe Earley, who fought for more than two decades to challenge sex discrimination against First Nations women embedded in Canada’s Indian Act and became a key figure the women’s rights movement in Canada.
Using never-before-seen archival footage and audio recordings, Courtney Montour, Mohawk filmmaker, engages in a deeply personal conversation with the late Mohawk woman who challenged sexist and genocidal government policies that stripped First Nations women and children of their Indian status when they married non-Indian men.
Ms. Montour speaks with Nellie Carlson, Cree activist, co-founder of Indian Rights for Indian Women, and Ms. Earley's lifelong friend and meets with three generations in Ms. Earley's kitchen in Kahnawà:ke. This documentary honours the legacy of a woman who galvanized a national network of allies to help restore Indian status to thousands of First Nations women and children.
A very empowering story and heroism of what power women have when we band together. I am Indian is an impacting truth for all Women, most especially minority; What a fight (17 years) Mary went through in battling with legislative body and yet she did not waiver or lost her cool. She remain humble, resilience and true leader. Today in 2021, BIPOC women still continues the fight to be seen, respected and belong; so I SALUTE Mary in paving the way. May her spirit continues to rest in eternal peace.
