On October 24, 2022, the Teaching & Learning Centre Team was joined by 120 faculty and employees who attended the first in-person Teaching & Learning Day since the pandemic. The theme of the event was “Culturally Responsive Teaching in Action.”

The day was full of exciting opportunities to reflect, discuss, and explore ways to bring equity and inclusion into our teaching and learning practices.

Conference Highlights

The event planning committee put together a diverse program with educational and technological experts who present on a broad range of critical and current topics for today’s teaching and learning.

Our first keynote speaker was Shakil Choudhury, author of Deep Diversity and a renowned consultant on equity, diversity, and inclusion in organizations. He spoke about using compassionate and inclusive approaches to supporting post-secondary students. An interactive workshop followed, where participants discussed strategies to incorporate the principles and practices that were shared in the morning keynote.

The afternoon keynote speaker was Maha Bali, Professor of Practice at the Centre for Learning and Teaching at the American University in Cairo. In her talk "Applying Intentionally Equitable Hospitality in Culturally Diverse Classes," Bali engaged participants in a discussion on equity and care in the intercultural classroom.

The afternoon's keynote was followed by a faculty panel, which was an interdisciplinary discussion with colleagues who promote culturally responsive approaches in their teaching. Thank you to the panel members: Kirsti Clarida (School of Health Sciences), Jo Ann Iantosca (School of Early Childhood Education), Lavaughn John (School of English and Liberal Studies), McDonald Kyte (School of English and Liberal Studies), and Azhar Lahar (School of Management and Entrepreneurship). Special thanks to Holly Cybulski (School of Media and the Teaching & Learning Centre) for moderating the panel.

We were excited to honour the winners of Seneca's Teaching and Learning Awards for Faculty: Athena Hurezeanu from the School of Hospitality and Tourism is the recipient of the Seneca Award for Teaching Excellence; Philip Ackerman from the School of Community Services is the recipient of the Seneca Award for Teaching Excellence in Flexible Delivery; and Aladdin AlRadhi from the School of Information Technology Administration and Security. Their contributions and commitment have positively improved the quality of education and enriched the experiences of their students. These awards recognize and celebrate outstanding faculty who make a difference by engaging students, inspiring colleagues, caring for their students, and demonstrating innovative teaching practices. Full details are available on the Seneca's Teaching and Learning Awards for Faculty webpage.

Recordings and resources are available on the Teaching & Learning Day Fall 2022 event website.

We hope to see you at our next Teaching and Learning Day which is held during study week of every term!
