Course Description

This course, offered in a hybrid format, is designed to help participants explore and use academic technology to enhance teaching and learning. Through experiential means, participants will be exposed to a wide variety of academic technologies and the teaching and learning techniques/methodologies used in the implementation of these technologies.

Participants will complete an individualized, technology enhanced learning project based on an area of interest to them, and will have the opportunity, should they wish, to try out these projects in the classroom, online, with colleagues, or in a teaching and learning work situation (e.g., a workshop). As such, this course is designed to be practical. Further, active participation will be encouraged throughout by way of regular discussions (in-class and online) and knowledge sharing/feedback opportunities.

Learning Outcomes

Active participation in this course through the completion of course tasks along with regular communication with fellow participants and facilitators will enable you to achieve the following learning outcomes.

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Describe academic technologies used to enhance teaching and learning in the college environment
• Analyze teaching and learning techniques/methodologies in the implementation of technology enhanced learning
• Identify issues (such as copyright, intellectual property, accessibility, usability) in the implementation of technology enhanced learning
• Create online learning content/activities that enable students to meet required learning outcomes in their own content area(s), and meet core literacy expectations

Prerequisite:

Foundations of Teaching and Learning (FTL) is the prerequisite for TEL.

Course Format and Approach

This course uses a hybrid learning strategy. Participants will meet in class half the time and online half the time. During the Spring session, this course will also be taught in compressed mode (i.e., one face-to-face and one online class each week for 6 weeks). The content of the course will comprise a mix of readings, multimedia learning objects, web explorations, discussions, and participant generated content (to be shared with each other). Much of the learning will come by way of peer to peer knowledge sharing (experiences of practice), through in-class and online discussions, and through the completion of course tasks. As such, regular, active participation in online and in-class activities is expected.

TEL Deliverables

To be awarded a certificate of completion, participants must participate in class activities and not miss more than one classroom session. In addition, you are required to prepare and/or demonstrate the following:

• an online Faculty Portfolio WordPress site
• Learn@Seneca courses that adhere to the Minimum Requirements Policy
• Learn@Seneca courses that utilize at least three of the available tools (for example, wikis, blogs, journals, assignment submission, discussion board, voice board, learning modules, group tools, online tests/surveys, etc.). For each tool describe the teaching and learning rationale behind its use
• recreate a lesson that you currently use in the classroom so that it can be taught online using Web 2.0/Cloud tools of your choice (at least two). Describe the teaching and learning rationale behind each technique used with particular emphasis on enhanced student learning and engagement. Describe how the lesson meets/adheres to current usability, accessibility, universal instructional design, and copyright standards, and how the lesson enhances the development of Seneca core literacies.

The above deliverables will contribute to the participant’s Faculty Portfolio.
